When solar is used to power devices that are far away from regular electrical lines, it is commonly called "off grid" solar power. Sharp manufactures several solar modules that are especially tailored for off-grid applications. These solar modules are great for charging battery systems that are configured in 12 volt increments.

In an off-grid system, the flow of electrons coming out of a solar module is managed by a device called a charge controller. The charge controller will allow or limit electron flow to charge batteries. The batteries store energy and release energy when needed. An inverter can take energy from the batteries and convert it to common AC energy to run any electrical device in remote areas where there are no electrical lines from a conventional power company. Off grid solar systems can provide daytime and nighttime power for things such as lights, TVs, stereos, security cameras, wi-fi routers, traffic signals, pumps, anything that requires electricity.
